Meyer won’t mention by Michigan by name

By Zac

If you noticed on National Signing Day — or any other day — that Ohio State coach Urban Meyer never refers to Michigan by name, there’s a reason for that.

Apparently, there’s even a rule for that.

Though Meyer said his use of “our rivals” or “those guys” is “just something I learned from Coach (Woody) Hayes many, many years” ago when Meyer was a graduate assistant at Ohio State, he also hinted to an in-house rule against using the M-word.

Asked on the Dan Patrick Show on Thursday morning what happens if he slips and says “Michigan,” Meyer said “pushups…I pop down and do 10 pushups.”

At his National Signing Day press conference on Wednesday, Meyer didn’t back down from prior comments that the Buckeyes are chasing the SEC, but he acknowledged “those guys” — Michigan — as the main competition. He even acknowledged the Wolverines also having a very good recruiting class and even said that’s good for the Big Ten Conference.

“We have one rival, and that rival has been dictated many, many years ago,” he said. “I’ll make it real clear there’s one rival. There’s one person we’re going after, and that’s our rival. That was dictated many, many years ago. So that’s it.”
