National Signing Day has become a national holiday due to football.
But it signals the start of the signing period in other fall sports, too, and the nationally-known Akron soccer program has signed a familiar name.
Robby Dambrot, son of Akron basketball coach Keith Dambrot, will join new coach Jared Embick’s program next fall.
“I wanted it to be Robby’s decision,” Keith Dambrot said. “I stayed out of it. I told him I’d answer any question he had, but I wanted him to make the right choice. I think he wanted to go to Akron, but it wasn’t easy.”
Robby Dambrot originally committed to High Point and ended up visiting several other schools. He attends Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary High School but played soccer at International Academy last fall, and over time came to think Akron was the best fit.
“I know he got better at the Academy, and I know that Jared thinks he will be a fit,” Dambrot said. “It’s a good thing. You want your kids to be happy, and all along I think he wanted to go to his hometown school, where his sister goes to school and his grandmother was a professor and where he’s really grown up. For him to have a chance in such a great soccer program, I’m just proud and excited.”
