Five-star linebacker Mike Mitchell of Plano, Texas has signed with Ohio State.
Might his brother, Mickey be next — for basketball?
Thad Matta, Ohio State’s basketball coach, hopes so.
Mickey Mitchell is Scout.com’s No. 4 basketball prospect in the class of 2015. He plays at Prestonwod Christian High School with Julius Randle, a premium recruit in the class of 2013.
“I don’t know where (Mickey) is going to go, but I know he hears from Ohio State,” their father, Ken Mitchell, said this week. “He’s not ready to decide, but I know he’s heard from (Matta). And his big brother and Urban Meyer have talked to him about it, too.”
The Mitchell Brothers have good genes. Ken had brief professional careers in both baseball and football and now works training young athletes. He’s done very well in his own house. Mike is 6’4, 225 and was timed at 4.39 seconds in the 40-yard dash last summer. Mickey is 6’6, 195 and has been highly recruited since he was in middle school.
“Mike has always been a gifted basketball player,” Ken Mitchell said. “For a while, I thought that would be his sport.
“Mickey has really taken off with (basketball). It will be interesting to see where he goes with it. The other day I saw my ninth-grader (McKinley) jump up flat-footed and tomahawk dunk it like he was in the NBA, so they like basketball.”
And Buckeye fans would like to see them all, together, in Columbus a few years from now.
