CLEVELAND — Cavaliers guard Kyrie Irving, forward Tristan Thompson, center Tyler Zeller and guard Dion Waiters have been selected to participate in the Rising Stars Challenge during NBA All-Star weekend in Houston, the league announced Wednesday.
Irving was also voted to the Eastern Conference All-Star team by coaches. Players participating in the Rising Stars game were selected by assistant coaches.
“We’re very proud of Kyrie, Tristan, Dion and Tyler and the efforts they are putting in to earn this kind of recognition,” said Cavs GM Chris Grant. “Internal growth with our young core is very important to us and this is a good reflection of their development. It is also great they will be able to experience this special All-Star weekend together and we look forward to seeing their continued hard work and progress.”
Teams for the Rising Stars game will be selected via a draft, held by former NBA stars and current TNT analysts Charles Barkley and Shaquille O’Neal.
Thompson was the No. 4 overall pick in the 2011 draft. Waiters, the No. 4 selected in 2012, and Zeller (No. 17) are both rookies. Irving, of course, was the top overall selection in 2011.
The Rising Stars Challenge will be televised by TNT, Feb. 19 at 9 p.m.
