AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – Cavaliers rookie guard Dion Waiters will not play in Monday night’s game at Detroit, the team announced about an hour before the 7:30 tip-off.
Waiters suffered a left ankle sprain in Saturday’s double-overtime loss vs. Portland and was listed as questionable. His status remains questionable for the Cavs’ home game Wednesday vs. Chicago.
Small forward Omri Casspi will move into the starting lineup Monday, Cavs coach Byron Scott said, with regular starter Alonzo Gee sliding to shooting guard. Point guard Jeremy Pargo, power forward Tristan Thompson and center Anderson Varejao fill out the rest of the starting lineup.
The Pistons will counter with center Greg Monroe, forwards Jason Maxiell and Tayshaun Prince, and guards Kyle Singler and Brandon Knight.
Waiters is averaging 15.2 points per game, including 20.5 in the Cavs’ four wins. He joins starting point guard Kyrie Irving (broken left index finger) on the sidelines.
Irving has been cleared for all but contact drills at practice, but is expected to miss at least another week.
