The Bengals have lost rookie wide receiver Mohamed Sanu to a foot injury, and probably for the season.
That word came Friday from head coach Marvin Lewis, who said Sanu suffered a stress fracture during practice this week.
It’s terrible timing for the Bengals. Sanu has 16 catches on the season, 11 in the last three weeks.
That includes the first four touchdowns of his career. He had the first multi-TD game of his career last week vs. Oakland.
Andrew Hawkins (knee) is likely back this week in San Diego, and fellow rookie Marvin Jones has played in spots, but Sanu was developing chemistry and confidence with Andy Dalton, and his loss is a big one.
The Bengals and Steelers both enter the weekend at 6-5 and tied for the final AFC wildcard spot. The Steelers play at Baltimore Sunday are likely to be again without quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.
