Betty White supporting your team is not a good sign

By Barry McBride

This being Cleveland, and all, folks here are tittering with glee over a recent promo in which the star of the mockingly-titled Hot in Cleveland declares that the Browns will win next year’s Super Bowl.

White, a sort of Clara Peller for the Age of Snark, is supposed to endear herself further to the locals through her unbearably naive prediction. The Browns, currently rated at 100-1 (worse than 2011) to get to the Super Bowl, aren’t being taken seriously as a Super Bowl contender by anyone.

Could you imagine this sort of thing in any time from the 1940s through 1980s? Even in the 1990s, the Browns were taken seriously as a franchise, for the most part. This sort of thing simply shows how far the franchise has fallen, and how the first 40-plus years of glory have been decimated by the expansion years.

There’s absolutely nothing fans can do, of course, but grin and bear it, hoping that things somehow change.

But, hey, someone in a TV show mentioned the Cleveland Browns, so let’s fawn all over it.

Awww… isn’t that cute? BUT IT’S WRONG!
