It was the middle of August – one month away from the (hopeful) opening of National Hockey League training camps – and over 300 people filled a restaurant in Columbus to celebrate their Columbus Blue Jackets. Just because they wanted to.
That’s the quick, clinical summary of the day’s activities.
But does such a cursory overview give credence to the level of enthusiasm and dedication of a fanbase that doesn’t even know if they’re going to get any NHL hockey this season, let alone the opportunity to see an NHL All-Star Game in person as they’ve been promised?
Does that adequately express the passion that is streaming out of Tom “Skraut” Larrow’s brand new fan videos, “Dark Horses”:
…and “Who I Am” (my personal favorite):
And what do we make of the nearly $1,000 raised for the Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation through raffles of CBJ memorabilia donated by a variety of organizations and fans?
Perhaps there could be something to the fact that generations of fans – from senior citizens to seven-month-old infants – showed up to celebrate Blue Jackets hockey?
And then, what about the role of social media for an event organized and run by bloggers, largely promoted over Twitter and Facebook, providing our honored guests with an impressive display of the power of these networking tools that I gather simply isn’t being done by other major sports teams like we did in turning CannonFest from a glimmer in a couple eyes into a near-overflow house in just three years?
No, there’s more than meets the eye…much more…but you know what? We just had fun – celebrating our favorite hockey team with friends old and new. That, to me, is what this CannonFest thing is about.
Let’s sign off with a montage of CannonFest photos taken by our own FOX Sports Ohio Girls (who, unlike me, can multitask well and grabbed some pics while meeting, greeting, handing out prizes and conducting interviews):
Thanks to all who came out and shared CannonFest 2012 with us! Here’s to a great 2012-13 Columbus Blue Jackets season!
